Description Span of time.

2000 years ago, the Greeks had a way of understanding and talking about time that we have all but lost. To them time was not just a static thing. A past event could have impact and effect on a current event and move into the future. While we understand these concepts when they are explained, the beauty of Koine Greek, is that these thoughts, as well as many others, could be contained within one word. For us, to convey the same ideas, takes many words, many sentences and even in some cases paragraphs.

This image takes the concept of time and measurement, and treats them as equals. It challenges us to consider the meaning of time and its measurement, for our lives and our world.

So was yours. I really liked the "Rome" shot. For some reason that old world imagery speaks to me. (I think you should post more if you have them).

I would not worry about the age. If the images are good, just post them.

Lovely old feel this picture has. I also love the concept. Time is a weird thing indeed, we can`t live whitout it, yet it chases us.
Awesome picture!

The colour and composition is amazing.

Have you read Vonneguts SlaughterHouse 5? That's how I imagine time to be which is mildly similiar but very much without the beauty of one word.

the title you included is familiar to me, but probably it is something I did not read, just because of the title...(I'm a bit squeemish...but I like to say its because I am sensitive...lol).

Thanks for taking time to comment.

Haha, fair enough. It's not graphic or anything.

"Billy Pilgrim says that the Universe does not look like a lot of bright little dots to the creatures from Tralfamadore. The creatures can see where each star has been and where it is going, so that the heavens are filled with rarefied, luminous spaghetti."
//
"All moments, past, present, and future always have existed, always will exist. The Tralfamadorians can look at all the different moments just the way we can look at a stretch of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are, and they can look at any moment that interests them. It is just an illusion we have here on Earth that one moment follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone it is gone forever."

I'll be quiet now, all the best.

well then maybe I will reconsider. I spent a good part of my life saving children from painful situations, not sure I always did what was best, but I am pretty sure a few lives were saved. In any event, that experience kind of made me withdraw from exposing myself to painful situations that are not necessary. I find there are enough in life to deal with, I don't need more so I choose my books and movied carefully...and sometime I blow it and suffer.

I liked your comments about "Billy Pilgrim" because they fit with the description I was trying to make about the greek concept of time, especailly in the "perfect". It is not an east concept to understand but I think Billy would have understood the Koine Greeks.

I understand what you mean. Sometimes though that's the beauty of movies and books. They allow you to experience things whether wonderful or terrible on a relatable but very much removed level. It sounds as though you spent a good part of your life doing something well worthwhile.

Well if you do read it I hope you get the same sort of contented happiness from it as I did.

I really like this thaumadzo as all the elements in this really pull together to become one whole entire story. I also like the warmth. I know you do not like photoshop manipulating of photographs too much, but I happen to think if you took this into PS and warped the face of that watch, and maybe made the numbers a sort of neon orange, this image would really sell fast. But I know that's only my personal opinion....and the work is beautiful as is. I was wondering if the watch works because the hands don't move, and I can't hear any ticking.....well, even if it isn't working, you really do beautiful work. ~Anya

WayneBenedet In reply to ARomanov [2007-03-02 14:57:06 +0000 UTC]

LOL....

It was working beautifully on the day i took the picture. If you cannot hear the ticking I think that perhaps your computer needs the "ticking clock upgrade" by Microsoft. I am sure if you look on line you will find it without any problems.

Your suggestion intregues me. But I am not sure I know what you mean by "warp" the face. I thought "warp" was something they did on Star Trek lol...

(Actually Anya, I have been playing a fair bit on PS. And I have been looking at this picture thinking it could make an interesting manipulation. (Another photographer on dA gave me some help with the program, and a whole new world has opened for me in the last week or so). In fact, a number of the images on my gallery have been modified and changed in the last week.) I am still getting over the feeling that this manipulation is cheating....I hope my therapist can help...if not..its off to confession AGAIN...lol.

(ps....I am teasing a LOT here, I am not sure if you know the phrase, but "my tongue is firmly planted in my cheek" but I hope you can discipher the "schput" from the real)

Thank you. I went to the windows update site for administrators, and found the file, downloaded it and installed. I then went to your work "Span of Time" and the download must have worked because the time on your clock had changed from when I saw it last. And then, out of somewhere, an alarm went off and made me jump. Did you have to set that??????
PS: this is all payback for your trick on me ..................

I am happy you are playing in PS. It really is addictive. I used to think it was cheating, too, but it isn't as it is an entirely different art form. It is also very difficult.....but I can see so many of your works making brilliant manipulations......and if we think even of photography in years past, even they would enhance things but it the dark room, not in PS as is done now.

Yes....I know you are teasing... Please....do not go to confession.....we may not see you for a looooong time. .......

I look forward to seeing a manipulation from you maybe.........perhaps your therapist could aid in getting you over the anxiety of feeling that Photoshop is a big cheater.......they say Valerian helps too....... .......hahhahaha...~Anya

thanks, but I will pass on the lap top. Actually I use a Palm when I am away now. It will e-mail, I have used to to reply to messages on dA, it has a separate keyboard....probably th esmallest computer Ihave ever had. And It will connect to the net anywhere there is a wifi or blue tooth connection. Technology is wonderful.

and I agree with your comment about sleep patterns. I am sure age plays a role, but I am also sure that our own strange creations are a part. (I mean the way that each of us has been created, our personalities etc.)

Hi Justine,

I amreally sorry, but the thread of this disucssion has been lost for me. I can find everything that was siad, but I just can't recall my thoughts at the time.

I think it was this though. Because of the contrast of the scene, and the lighting on the crysal, the detail on the face of the watch was slightly degraded, it was just not as dark as I wanted. So after we talked, I did apply another layer and concentrated of bringing out the face of the watch. The results from my perspective are better.

have a good week.

Thanks also for your appreciation of the "Span of Time" and "Key of Light". I think have taken a few good pictures, but it seems that these two have somehow allowed me to improve my technique.
