its not original, i think some ideas were taken from a trilogy by phillip pullman

that was a loonnngggg time ago. He's a writer, and in a set of his books he described windows hanging in mid air which link to other worlds

Wilby3000 In reply to HAMMER-TIME [2005-10-11 16:27:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh... OK. Well, I don't quite see how that can be considered as the same concept. No windows, no mid air... No other worlds. I can see the association, kind of.

I'm a sensitive bugger, so don't mind me...

Who the hell is Phillip Pullman? And where does the "mirror in the field" concept come across his ... erhm... stuff, work, photography?

This must be the most brilliant idea I've seen in a very long time!
I've played a bit with mirrors myself, but I never thoght of this! Kudos to you and also a thumb up for the composition, I like the off-center placement. of -

Thank you! Shooting with mirrors is a real pain in the ass. Keeping yourself out of the picture is a bitch. I hate centered compositions... Glad you like it!

This is quite surreal, and very interesting indeed. It makes one wonder just how far one's idea of reality extends. It makes one wonder where does reality end before one just walks off the edge and into the eternal blue of the unknown.

Wilby3000 In reply to Sleepwalking-Dreamer [2004-07-02 21:36:38 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. I think it's interesting that I can borrow a sky into a green landscape. The fact that our eyes dictate reality is so interesting, and intriguing to play with.

Thank you for your comment! Sorry for the late reply.

wildoats [2004-07-01 05:44:18 +0000 UTC]

From a technical standpoint, I would love to see that shadow disappear. Otherwise this is well executed.

However, this seems to be heavily influenced by some surrealist paintings / photos I've seen. I am thinking specifically of the painting of outer space, and there is an open door and behind the door is blue sky. Can't remember what it's called . So yeah, although it is a nice idea, I have seen it done before in a few places.

Still, thought provoking and pleasing to the eye. Not a bad shot.

Wilby3000 In reply to wildoats [2004-07-02 16:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the critique. Much appreciated and definetly refreshing. I agree on the shadow. The reason I left it was because I wanted the photo be pure photography without manipulating. I had a lot of trouble getting the clouds to reflect from the mirror, so there was not other way to place the mirror either... Alas, the day was too clear, and I didn't really plan the shoot at all. I was just hauling the mirror around in my car, and I found that nice field at the edge of town.

I thought this was a bit too commercial and candyland for my taste but I'm glad people like it.

It looks a bit to blurry or maybe it's just my eye cause I just woke up ? Is anyone else experiencing fuziness ?? None the less, great photograph and concept, when I fist saw it I thought that it had to be a manipulation but as I continued to look I started to realise it was a mirror. Great work, must have taken you a while to think this up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wilby3000 In reply to tjn [2004-07-02 21:52:01 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I found two mirrors next to a trash can, so I just snagged them. I shot a few shots and decided to compile a series with them. I was pretty much roaming around with two mirrors in my car and I saw that field next to an intersection, I got the idea, and almost killed myself when I made a sharp illegal right turn... So, it was in the spur of the moment really.

Thank you for dropping by and commenting!

downwitda [2004-06-30 23:04:36 +0000 UTC]

It would be nice if the mirror was positioned so that its shadow would be almost imperceptible...a.k.a. parallel to the sun's rays. That would look even more otherworldly.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wilby3000 In reply to downwitda [2004-07-02 21:53:45 +0000 UTC]

That would be lovely but the mirror had to be tilted in order to catch the sky properly, so it couldn't have been done. I think I'll manip the shadow off though when I make a print available.
