Description It's done...

It's done, diddly, done. I think I'm going to cry...

I'm really happy with this tutorial, even though it looks cheap and dodgy (took me three days to make it, and even so it still looks cheap and dodgy), because I did everything myself! I figured out all the little buttons and liksies and everything, without even using the Flash tutorials! HEEE!

As I promised the peoplies out there who keep asking me 'How the HUCK do you colour like that?!', here's a little COPIC Tutorial for you. But just because I do it this weay, doesn't mean EVERYBODY has to. Get your own style! Develop individually! Be unique! AND DON'T STEAL MY WAYS! XDDD

Enjoy!

Hey! I noticed you recently responded to someone so thought i would try and get an answer from you. I plan on getting a couple of copic markers (just to try them out, see if i like them) this weekend. Which colors do you think I should get if i only get like two markers? o.o thanks in advance!

Back when I got my markers, I started out with only two flesh-coloured ones, one of them being Baby Skin Pink. It helped to practice skin tones and shading with them.

I'd suggest getting a couple of markers in the same colour palette, so you can practice blending with them and figuring out shadows.

I just found my markers in a local art supply store, but I'm pretty sure you can buy them online through the COPIC website too.

What colors would you recommend getting first? o.o
as basic colors

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yiji In reply to hinacamui [2011-09-01 22:24:08 +0000 UTC]

When I first got my set, I bought a basic set of loose colors to form the color-wheel, and a few extras. So I'd get the ROYGBV set (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet), plus a brown, black and grey. After you get your basic colors, it's good to expand your collection to get different shades depending on what you do. Since I did a lot of skin work, I also got the skin-tone markers too.

Hope this helps!

I bought red, brown, light blue and a darker red (plus multiliners) today in Kichijoji. I have copic ciao skin tone set already shall use that until I can afford more copics~

Before I buy the COPIC outliners, do they fade much when erasing a pencil sketch behind them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yiji In reply to RingetteChic7 [2011-03-02 07:29:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't exactly remember what colors I used, since I made this so many years ago. But yes, I find that, depending on what type of paper you use, the outliners do tend to fade once you erase the pencil underneath.

If you are erasing, try to keep it very light, go over the pencil with your eraser in very light strokes.

Hi Yiji,
I have been drawing in both an American Cartoon and Manga style for years! I have used every coloring medium known to man. Now working as a character designer I invested in copics and have been using them for about a year now trying to get better with them.

Words cannot express how helpful your tutorial has been to me and how many times I have gone back to it to just double check on techniques. I thought I needed you to know that. So please, keep them coming. You are fantastic!

I know it's hard to get the cases for copics (it took me forever to find them being sold without being full of markers!) I do have a spare case if you would like it! In my appreciation for your help.

Best Wishes and keep up all your amazing work!
Kazekuro

Yiji In reply to Kazekuro [2010-09-30 11:47:47 +0000 UTC]

Hello! Thank you so much for liking my tutorial! ^_^

While I do really appreciate the offer of a Copic case, I'm afraid that, since I live in Australia, it might be far too expensive for you to send over, and my conscience would not allow that. But nevertheless, I am deeply grateful that you enjoyed my tutorial so much. I made it as a way for fellow artists to share their tips and tricks, and, while I profess myself to not being an expert with copics, at least I am glad it helped someone.

Your wonderful comment was more than enough for me and my poor, battered ego XD''' I had thought about making a better, more updated tutorial (since it has been a few years since I made this) but it is difficult, since I lack the time.

I hope all your future endeavors succeed, and good luck with all your drawing work! ^_^

nice tutorial ^^ There's actually a book on how to draw manga art and color it in with copics
For the people who can't easily find well if you live in belgium or the netherlands just check the dutch copic site
there's a list with stores. I found copics online on archonia and schleiper (best store i've ever been to) sells them too

I'm looking into getting some Copic Cias as my local art store seems to have caught up with the times and actually started selling markers. Thanks for this it seems really helpful and I may have more of an idea of what colours to get, and the colouring seems easy enough as it's 'light to dark'
