Description
An online friend of mine randomly messaged me saying they had a turtle which he had found dead - hit by car. He had had it in a box for months and decided to give it to me to work with. When I asked what kind of turtle it was he answered - common snapping turtle. When the box arrived the turtle was nothing but bones and naturally mummified leather. The shell was in several large pieces from the car strike but the bones within were undamaged. (A real shame, for the shell alone is nearly 14 inches long. He was a full adult and probably rather old. A real shame even more so he was killed by some driver.) After a through disinfect cleaning the bones were buried in cat litter with smell removing granules to remove the bad smell for a week.
This is the skull. The brown around the back of the skull is where the natural leather would not come off so it was simply disinfected and 'de-smelled' this way. I believe it gives the poor old guy character. I’ve named him, Big Hoss given how huge he must have been in life. His skull rests on my altar while the rest of the skeleton will be used in art projects.
