I can assist you here~
Write the text in basic black text and follow the tutorial up to pasting it into the image as a new layer. Then go to Layer and click on Luminance to Transparency. It takes all the values and converts them into various alphas (anything white is now transparent, anything black remains opaque, and the values in between black and white are the appropriate levels of transparency). Next click Preserve Opacity on your layer section, and fill it in with white, and you're good!
You can also do this to do any other color you may need.

Thank you so much!! It's super helpful ! (Trying to make a character ref sheet and was stumped as to how to get text on there - and my handwriting is rather atrocious so that wasn't an option either.)

The text is really transparent. Is there a simple fix?

instead of using multiply paste it onto your image the use luminescence to transparancy

for those who dont know how to change the text color, its simple, as is there a another way to change the text layer transparancy. You can simply click "Layer" at the top of the screen and select Luminance to Transparancy. Works the same as setting the layer to multiply. as for changing text color, open a blank layer above the layer containing the text and clip it. then use the bucket tool with whatever color you want. Only the text will change color. then merge the two layers together when satisfied.

Do the same process but paint black on paint, then use white text.
