Description
Something I started last year. I don't feel like I can really call this "finished" since there are so many things that bother me about it, but I can't be bothered spending any more time on it for now.And the scan made it look even worse. Blah.

... perhaps... you are afraid to add in more shadows for fear it would hide many details you'd worked hard on, or ruin your work irreversibly?
.. beautiful details nonetheless...
even if it bothers you, its only because you are its creator, this is always the case.

This is brilliant!
And the fact that you did it in watercolors makes it even more brilliant. *bows down to the awesome watercolors*

Man, how did I miss this one? I know you say you don't like it much, but I really love how it turned out. Scanners just don't do justice to artwork as intricate as this. Regardless, it still looks great.
How are you doing, btw? We haven't talked in ages. *sad panda* :[

Hey, thank you! The whole thing was done with watercolors, and some gouache for the highlights.
And I'm doing all right. Away from home at the moment, doing some work for Weta, if you know who they are. And how are you doing?

Wow, Weta? That's impressive to say the least. I hope you like it there! I am doing ok, just taking some basic classes atm, nothing spectacular. Drawing I, woo. Trying to get back into making art after a year of nothing. <_> I don't know if you still use AIM, but if you do and want to chat sometime, let me know.

Yarr, I'm back home now though. It's interesting working there, although very draining, too.
It's good to hear you're trying to get back into art! I'm in the same situation. I've done little other than sketches for the last year, and I'm trying to change that. Trying being the key word there.
I haven't used AIM in forever, but I just downloaded it again the other day, so I'll try and be on there occasionally

To me it doesen't look worse, but of course there is much difference in any art you make in RL and in IRL.
But truly, i think it's gorgeus : )

The detail in this is amazing and the time you took to make everything as good as you could make it is obvious and makes the picture on the whole so much better. I'm not sure what you don't like about it, but I can tell you that the concept you have going on that has to do with the wood muzzle being part of the larger dragon is very good... Also, the sort of mossy/drooly/starry background you paired with this gives off just the right ominous sort of feeling it needs.

It's been a long time since you posted this, but something about this picture reminds me about that black dragon attraction you had awhile ago.. almost as if there is that dark side coiling around and suppressing the core Zarathus.. Hmm hmm, that's as vauge as I can make it sound while still hopefully making some sort of sense XD. Places like this just aren't very private or good for soul searching discussions.

I can't remember now if I explained the whole "black dragon" thing to you, but if I did, then this is likely the same thing you're thinking of
Yes, you do make sense, and your description sounds rather accurate for what (I think) it was intended to represent. The whole picture has sorta lost its meaning to me, over time.
Heh and yes, I definitely agree. But oh well! MSN is a most excellent means of discussion, whenever you're not busy

I'll be free eventually >_>, well, soonish I think (Thursday I hope, or Friday your time actually). And yes, I remember you telling me all about that. Interesting things, so I suppose it has lessened lately now then if the picture doesn't hold as much meaning? Mmm, MSN is looking rather tasty right now... but I need to grade quizzes and write a new one >.<

A lot of it is the shading. The image seems to have an overall look of flatness, to me. But I'm glad you like it, regardless Thank you.

dionneong [2006-08-17 05:58:22 +0000 UTC]
This is really beautiful..
The scales on the dragon are done perfectly, and for some reason the tounge is really neat looking. I love the shading when the dragon's 'skin' starts to twist and wrinkle.
And the expression on Zara is very emotional.. not to mention that the fur on her neck looks touchable.. xD And her wing is very nice.
The mask looks fragile.. But that could be symbolic.
It's still very amazing all in all.
Great artwork you have in your gallery, by the way. It's very very well done. I hope to see more from you!

Thank you I'm really glad you like it. Yeah, the muzzle-thing was intended to look fragile, too.
I'll try and upload more some time soonish. I seem to have a bit of art inspiration back, for the first time in almost a year

Everything looks fine to me, though I'm sure the original looks much better. I have the same problem with scans, it seems especially bad for colored works, though B&W pencil drawings don't seem to suffer as much. The detail in this must of taken some time. I especially love the dragon/tree/creature, and the green and blue in the background really sets the whole thing off.

zarathus In reply to Darksavvy [2006-08-25 22:46:45 +0000 UTC]
Thank you
Yes, it seems that everyone at least occasionally gets the same problem with scanning colored pictures. Scanners never seem to pick up the full spectrum of color in... anything. But black and white stuff is usually all right, yes.
The detail did take a significant amount of time, which is why the picture took me over 6 months to complete. But I'm glad you like it. Is always encouraging to get good feedback on the rare pictures I manage to finish

Darksavvy In reply to zarathus [2006-08-26 21:31:09 +0000 UTC]
I have some pictures like that where the detail is so great they sit around for months and I work on and off on them. Occasionally I get them finished and the result is usually worth it, but more often than not it's hard for me to focus for so long. Or the subject I found interesting months ago no longer holds my interest.
I feel like I'm still learning at this whole art thing yet though, maybe when I feel I have perfected my anatomy and shading will I move on to more complex detail. It pains me to see artists out there that can do beautiful detail work and yet lack the basic framework in their subjects. You however, have not made that mistake and it has payed off. Your work stands out because of it.

Hey, thank you
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what's going on. I suppose being absorbed would be fitting, and with how the picture looks, it does seem to suggest that might be the case
Yeah, I usually have watercolors looking rather watery as well. Getting them to look as they do in this picture took... forever. I don't even remember how many hours, now But thanks! Glad you like it.

I've seen some impressive watercolor work here on dA, but this is undoubtedly among the best of them! The details are so intricate that it's difficult for me to imagine you having used anything other than colored pencil - something with a sharp tip, anyway. Just looking at the scales, the root-like veins (or vein-like roots), and the shading in Zara's fur has got me spellbound. Very effective and disquieting ambience, and a fantastic concept overall.
