Description
The inspiration for this painting came from H.P Lovecraft concept of gaining knowledge outside of the mundane. If you look close enough on the little lady's head, you will see a small owl. In Greek myth, owl accompanies the Goddess of wisdom Athena. In many cultures especially in Japan, the fox represents intelligence and wit. While the butterflies are symbolic of transformation/metamorphosis/evolution.
Archival Materials: Artist grade Watercolor Paints, Gold watercolor paint, 100% cotton paper
UPDATED 02/14/2016: A special thanks to TychyTamara for the helpful critique. Now the final results is much more polished

Wow thank you! There's actually a secret to this painting when viewed in real life. The book and the blades of grass around the book shine gold and silver as it reflects light. The stars also shine silver

I love this! All the details - the owl is so cute, and I like how the fox is just hanging out & having a nap. Right down to the clusters of little pink flowers - very well done!

Beautiul painting! Love the vibrant colors and all the little bits you've included in the scene. That fox is beautiful! As is the hair that looks like a galaxy, with stars, butterflies, and even a cute little owl! I like how you swapped the colors of the hair and the sky for the butterflies. It makes it look like the butterflies cut themselves out from the hair and flew outside, which goes so well with the whole freedom feel of the piece. The bookholder butterfly is so pretty, too!

Thank you! The main theme of this painting is gaining inhuman knowledge and transcending from being mundane. THe buterflies signify transformation/metamorphosis into a higher being.

I decided to watch you because my professional artist friend once said "To be the best in any media, you have to have a great foundation with pencil/graphite on paper". You have amazing pencil works and they are all very inspiring.

May I ask? How does this particular piece make you feel? Sorry to be presumptuous, but is it okay to ask for your professional critique on the piece?
That would mean soooo much.

This colorful artwork sort of reminded me of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Her fantastic journey started after she fell asleep while reading a book outdoors on the grass.

Oh that's a super cool, I like how your mind works. I've always been a huge fan of fiction particularly fairy tales. With that in mind, the galaxy in "Insight" could be a metaphor for Alice's hallucinations or journey to wonderland?

I love the colors and I love how her hair looks like a galaxy, I also love how the colors blend. I'm a fan of painting even though I don't do it myself. I love that watercolor look. haha I don't know if this was helpful to you or not but I love this piece.

I like that i can feel that you are free. You said you started somewhat recently to paint and this doesnt look like you just started. I also like the use of pink thingies in grass since pink/red and green are opposite colors and they work great together. On the other side i think you should try to explain better what are those pink things, like flowers(i cant say for sure)? I also suggest that you dont use basic green you have in your tube, try to mix it with some brown or yellow, maybe this is my personal thing but i think raw green looks awful but mixed with some other colors can give much better look (raw green kind of hurts my eyes, does not please me but that can be just my taste). I loveeee water colors, been using them for years. try painting hair in layers, than wait it to dry than another layer etc.. Because i see different values here and im not sure what was your intention here. If you are into water coloring find some good examples and study them, see what they did to make it look like that.
If you are interested in watching videos i suggest you watching this 2 artist, one is a bit older guy working for over 20 years and other one is younger:
www.youtube.com/user/revolutio…
www.youtube.com/channel/UCA-iu…
They are very good and they have different kind of videos, i suggest watching them i dont miss their videos since i learn so much from them. Ahmed(frst one) has some very nice videos on explaining how to color, mix, blend colors its very good.
This was a long comment, Hope i helped

Thank you so much for the helpful critique. I kid you not I actually started first time ever in december 2015 lol. Yeah about the green I definitely need to layer various colors of green by mixing so that it won't be just one shade. Do you think I can still layer on watercolor without overworking the piece?
Thanks for the video links I highly appreciate the additional gesture of helping!
