“And now you see it,” he says, removing his cloak. “Your eyes are like Zirena’s when she first knew. Theonius knew it, and the High Lady Maladyne. And Anjerome, of course. But they’ve always known and kept it secret. Maladyne took that secret on her quest, and Anjerome took it to his grave, but Theonius’ plain truths have always fallen on deaf ears.” He lowers the spear and cloak wistfully. ‘Unkillable’ some have said of me.” The words softly shake the darkness of the corridor as he turns to face her. “But they’re wrong. They’ve been wrong each time, you see. Being killed comes easily--almost as easily as living again when that’s what I want.”

She finds herself rooted to the spot now--Too much horror in the world!--but Luther raises the spear’s black tip toward her. “Think it through, thief,” he says quietly. “Before you try and run, think it through, and you’ll see it changes nothing. It never has. A young boy fell to his death, and as the darkness claimed him he wished desperately for life to continue. The young magician who came to his aid drew upon extraneous magic--the smallest fragment of life that was close at hand. One wayward mote. Just a small, wandering fragment...and a miracle happened.”

He sighs. “Believe me when I say that being a miracle can be a terrible thing, and the only way I’ve found to accept it is to ignore it. That’s what I’m going to suggest to you here: Ignore it, because I need steel in your spine now, not ice.”

In Callista’s stunned silence, Luther turns back to the arched terminus. “Whatever’s in there was used to twist the thoughts of Dernhem’s people for more than a century, to bend them toward the Harbinger and toward House Martilis. It started with the highest ranking members of the Assembly Commendis and then filtered down to the lowliest serf for more than a hundred and fifty years. Then, ten years ago, Avora Villios’ scandal clouded it all with doubt, and the High Lady Maladyne left the Seat of Judgment to her Proximate and vanished. That the Lady Avora--your Lady Avar--should return here with some dark, personal intent does not surprise me…" He pauses. “So why don’t you tell me what will.”

Had a rough week this week, so I'm a little behind, and I've got a friend's wedding to attend this weekend so it'll probably make me late for the next one, but I should be back up and running very quickly thereafter.

Regarding the story, I think what is written above should piece together a great deal of everything if one has read/seen Luther's dream sequence in Twisted Plot, Part 2, in which he sees a child fall to his death.
