Callista stops short, recalling the only words her adopted father spoke to her after the feral, red-haired woman had slain him in the Undercellar. “No end, Cal,” he had croaked in the dark. “Can’t find the end…” Jervil had consoled her as much as the treacherous ratman could, saying that most of Albert Fiskerne yet remained and would continue long enough to settle matters with her and the Fair Harvest Inn. But she could not see in it a gift of any sort in such darkness, mishap, and tragedy.

In truth it haunted Callista, eclipsed only by her own betrayal of her lover, Anna and her rescuer, Drea. But there are uncomfortable echoes of her adopted stepfather’s short-lived horror in Luther Vandermoor. And as the man stops a few paces ahead of her in the shadows of the corridor’s end, she shivers. Her palms sweat around the grips of her blades.
