“And that’s why we’re here,” Luther responds quietly. “When one wants to die and can’t, something is dreadfully wrong. But when a whole city wants to die, wants life to end…” His eyes leave the coffer and slowly rise to hers. “That is something else again.”

“What city are you talk-...” Callista begins, her brow furrowing, but she stops as realization dawns.

“Now you see it, too,” Luther says. “I’ve known it for years, tried to convince myself my impression was wrong. But the Seeress…”

“Madame Zirena?”

“She saw it, too. Saw it clearly, and I couldn’t deny the truth of it anymore.”

“Luther, the Harbinger will come to save her people, not to kill them,” Callista claims, her voice wavering.

“Save them from what?” Luther asks quietly. “What army assails them? What horrible ills befall them? None but the travails of life to which we’re all born.” He pauses, his eyes going back to the coffer. “Dernhem is more secure now than it has ever been--even brigands strike with fists rather than knives. And from this the people would have the Harbinger save them?”
