(NOTE: The following narrative references the Hallowatch, which is shown and somewhat described in the two images thumbnailed below. In between the previous Luther-Callista scene and this one, the pair will walk through the Martilis Estate and see a couple of places important to the story, including the Hallowatch and Jervil's garden, and I may still try and draw those scenes here in the end of this first pass through the material. But for now, suffice to say that the Hallowatch has a lot of fadings in it, the spiritual echoes of people killed in the great battle of 200 years ago, and that Maladyne Martilis' family surrounded the area with their estate to keep lots of people from running around in there.)

“Dernhem has a dark side,” Callista responds. “My parents were killed by those brigands you talk of.”

"Then why don’t you want the Harbinger to save you?”

“I…” Callista begins but falters and lowers her eyes to the coffer.

“Come on, thief,” Luther presses. “You could be nestled into the Harbinger’s care forever, safe in the Great Hereother. Why do you not jump at the chance?”

The woman says nothing, and Luther waits in silence. “Because…” she says at last, “because I don’t believe it could be better than this. Sure, my life has been one of knives and shadows and loss, but it's been a life! From all I've seen, what I’d gain in the Hereother may well not be worth what it would cost me to get there.” She sighs. “I quit hoping for that kind of thing as a girl here on this estate, and I’ve never found it again."

Luther watches her.

"That’s what you were trying to show me out there at the Hallowatch," she continues. "All of those shades--just like in Jervil’s cellar. That’s what you’re saying is going to happen to Dernhem, isn’t it.”

He nods. “Those vestiges out there, their wants still echo across the whole of it. They were fleeing destruction, not bringing it to Dernhem. What you saw was not a camp of war, but a host of fearful people--men, women, children. The only difference between the Hallowatch and Dernhem is that, thanks to two hundred years of tradition, the people of Dernhem want what’s coming. It’s written into their laws, their statues, their songs, their hopes, their dreams, their lives.”

Callista's brow furrows. “And you want to stop it from happening?”

His eyes narrow, and a grin passes through the shadows of his face. “Don’t be daft, thief. How could I possibly stop it from happening?” And with these words Luther raises the great spear and taps the black tip onto the coffer’s lid.
