“‘Tell you...!?’” Callista snarls. “I thought you knew! Otherwise, why would you have brought me here?”

Luther shakes his head but keeps his pace. “Like I said, I only know you have a desperate desire to not go forward, and thus a need to see it through.” Then he pauses, and the thief stops short behind him until he again resumes his forward progress.

“But, as to that,” he continues, “I do have some idea. Accounts in the Magistrate’s archive say that even after Advent Day two centuries ago, the people of Dernhem were not all keen on the outcome nor devoted to the Lady of Light and Blade, which didn't sit well with Karea's successors. A tradition was soon started of inviting the nobility to Martilis Manor for celebrations of the great miracle that saved the city. That invitation became a measure of status in Dernhem and all children were soon tested against the imacola blossoms of these gardens, which were the most healthy and pure.”

He sighs, but Callista’s silence prompts him to go on. “As a boy I came here years ago to be tested myself. But things…” he pauses to glance backward, “...things didn’t go as planned.”

“What,” Callista urges, “the blossom changed for you, or it didn’t change like you wanted?”

"Neither," Luther says. "I didn’t pick an Imacola flower. I didn’t make it that far.”
