Luther nods. “The more useful of the two questions, but also the more complicated.” He breathes deeply and arches his back, then slows the horse’s pace a bit. Callista can detect no softening of the man’s menace or wariness toward her, but the immediate easing of the demands on her legs and feet brings a sigh of relief.
“People are people,” he says thoughtfully, “as silly as it sounds, but I think you understand the saying. One day the needs and desires of two people are aligned, and as people they claim friendship with each other. But in a coming day, whether very soon or after the passing of years, their needs and desires have changed so that they are no longer aligned and are perhaps opposed. At that point, whether or not they claim it, they are likely enemies. Similarly, people who were formerly enemies could have their needs and desires change so that they would claim some kind of friendship or allegiance, reliance or trust between them.” He pauses, barely turning for a half-glance in her direction. “Even if such a thing is likely doomed to change and make enemies of them again.”
“But, if you’re right, then nothing truly lasts,” she frowns, “and hoping for it is a fool's notion. Are we all doomed to change and potentially betray our friends and make enemies of them, or to make unlikely allies of our enemies?”
Luther smiles. “Some hope can be foolish, I agree. But you say ‘doomed to change,’ and that is an interesting notion. Perhaps instead of answering the question you should consider what the alternative is, and if it is any better.”
“You mean not to change?”
“Yes, being unchangeable. Would such a life be preferable to the one that folk--like yourself--are ‘doomed’ to live?”
“But isn’t the Lady of Light and Blade like that?” she frowns. “All the Otheren?”
Luther is quiet a moment. “Yes, I believe so. But you’re assuming they are better than people are, either for this reason alone, or for others with it. What if you stop and consider for a moment that it is the unchanging Otheren who are ‘doomed,’ as you say, while people like yourself must cope with these difficult changes because you can.”

Had some other stuff going on this past week that slowed my posting, but the artwork has progressed at the regular pace, so the next pages should go up pretty quick over the next couple of days.
This is the fourteenth page of the second-to-last chapter in the whole story, continuing a new scene which is really just a continuation of the previous one after Luther and Callista have made it most of the way through the Glimmerfalls on the map thumbnailed below.
Luther was drawn using the reference material provided to me by our own Mistersneaky . Thanks, Sneaky!
Enjoy!
Note: Chain of Events and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones this kind of treatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Thanks! It's all due to the reference model.

Who else thought that Jedi Master & General Obi-Wan Kenobi? (He looks like the Sith version.)
Great artwork!

Luther was pleased with himself. He had the legendary Vandermoor good looks, he was skilled with the sword (and would be even better once he figured out how to get the sheath off), had a noble steed who was a walking Cowboy Ballad iTunes, and was raking in the ducats as Acting High Lady (whatever her title was) and he didn't even have to wear the gown! And then there were the side benefits, like being able to drag around naked and tied up young lovelies on the end of a rope. And if they were suspected of something shady, it was legal! Yes, life was good.
Callie: "Hey Luther."
Luther: "What?"
Callie: "Ya got a dime?"
Luther: "No, I don't. What would I need with a dime?"
Callie: "For the tool booth, of course."
Luther: "I told you, we're not lost! One more wisecrack out of you and... Oh."
They finished rounding a turn in the trail and a shack with a lowered barrier pole came into view. Also, two men-at-arms and a pole flying a flag in the distinctive and truly ugly colors of West Depravia: squashed-tangerine and bilious-green. Luther pulled on the reins and Bruce clomped to a halt.
Luther: "I know exactly where we made the wrong turn."
Callie: "What you mean 'we,' Ke-mo sah-bee?"
Bruce snickered and pawed the ground in appreciation.
Luther: "Shuddup."
Luther clucked his tongue, tugged on the reins, turned Bruce's head, and they started back the way they'd come.
Bruce: "When we get back to the field with the buttercups were stopping."
Luther: "Maybe, but it's getting late and—"
Bruce [interrupting]: "It wasn't a suggestion."
And... Scene! {"Men! They never stop and ask for directions.")

I do believe Squashed Tangerine and Bilious Green were in fact both voted as the worst colors to wear in Dernhem for the last three years in a row, and thereby banned by Magistrate Decree. Fauvist Painters and the Fruit and Wasabi Vendors of the city protested at a rally held at Zirena's Taco Wagon...

When the news reached West Depravia, the Council of Town Fathers (the DarthMoot) sent a somewhat rude letter of protest to the High Lady and banned all imports from Dernhem for six months.
The Dernhem City Council retaliated by imposing a stiff tariff on all imported manufactured goods requiring an Allen Wrench for assembly.
And the Great Dernhem-West Depravian Trade War was on!
By the way, the West Depravian flag is a Bilious Green field with a Squashed Tangerine canton bearing two crossed Allen Wrenches. (Lots of countries and municipalities of Ikean origin feature Allen Wrenches in their coats of arms, flags, lunch boxes, and decoratively printed duct-tape. The much feared War Allen Wrench is the trademark weapon of the Ikean berserker.)

Talking on the impermanence of everything...sounds like Luther's been reading into the philosophies of the Eastern religions of late....
Nice brooding profile here...

Well, Drea made Herman Hesse's Siddhartha required reading for all officers and staff in the Arca Directris, and if you look (carefully) through Elina's well-ordered Archive, you will find several copies of Benjamin Hoff's The Tao of Pooh, though one of them has worn the "Pooh" off of the cover and an inked question scrawled irreverently in place (in Elina's hand, no less): "Exactly what kind of creature is this 'Winnie the Shit'?"
Thanks a bunch!

Handsome fella, that Luther Vandermoor! It's not quite the same appeal as Callista strolling in the sunlight in her full glory, but it'll do for now!

earlier in your series, when he was sending his female agents to their dooms, I thought he was sort of a doofus. But obviously there is a lot more to him!

I'm glad to hear there is more than "doofus" or "buzzkill" to him in your perception. Thanks!

This reminds me somewhat of the conversation in the movie Troy between Achilles and his new slavegirl Briseis, when he tells her that he knows the gods better than she does (and she was a priestess) because he's seen them and that the gods envy mortals because of their mortality. One of my favourite scenes from the movie.

That conversation was definitely part of the inspiration for what you're reading and seeing in this storyline. Thanks!

Well, thanks a ton! That is not a compliment I get that often, so it's nice to read that some of this is nice to read.
