“It seems our young Lord of Ulstan was fortunate to leave this place alive,” Luther says. “Perhaps the death of his horse was the only thing that kept this mob satisfied.”
“What mob?” Callista asks in alarm. “Dammit, Luther Vandermoor, what are you talking about?”
“Jackrats,” Luther answers. “But, to be honest, I don’t think they could really be called by that name anymore, for their hunger is larger than any I’ve felt in such creatures in the fields around Dernhem, or even in the cellars beneath the Fair Harvest Inn.”
“Jervil was... doing things to them, I think,” Callista says, nervously resuming her struggles against the bonds on her wrists. “He told me he lured a few of them and marked them with runes before I returned, and then he warned me never to come this way withou-...” she breaks off awkwardly.
“Without the trinket stashed in your satchel,” Luther finishes, reading the desperate desire that suddenly flares within her. “Did he enchant it to protect you?”
“How should I know such a thing?!” Callista snaps, abandoning the hope to conceal the secret of her protective trinket. Her fingers flex wildly as she gives a kick. The horse stomps another foot and takes a step to one side. “I’m no magician. Are you?!”
“Hardly,” Luther answers, keeping the horse under control and pressing down harder on the woman’s flank. “The Lady Elina suggested to the High Lady Drea and myself that the source of our jackrat problem in the western farmlands was likely here at the Martilis Estate rather than in the southeastern Merwood as we were led to believe.” He shakes his head. “She’s been on the mark this whole time--every bit as sharp as her elder sister, the woman you know as the Dark Lady Avar.”
“Well, she came this way, too, I think,” Callista says, continuing to struggle. “Sharp or not, her magics didn’t save her from Jervil’s traps, and since you know about it I won’t try and lie--the only thing that let me pull the defeated Lady out of the horrid mess she got herself into was the alacriax charm Jervil gave me.”

The writing in the background of the image is actually taken from the current text of the to-be-published Elina's bestiary, the first draft of which is complete and awaiting illustrations and publication.
This is the 26th page of the second-to-last chapter in the whole story, continuing the last scene in the journey Luther and Callista make to the Martilis Estate (formerly "Mitesceru Estate"). I have the next eight pages already finished and ready for posting, so they should go up pretty quickly for the next few weeks. At this point, the two characters have traveled to where the Westfield Road turns North and East toward in the upper left of the map thumbnailed below.
Elina was drawn using references taken by me of Emily at whitefeather when she visited a few months ago. Thanks, Emily!
Enjoy!
Note: Chain of Events and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones this kind of treatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Quite an insight, and it is indeed partly accurate, both in the case of Martin Luther and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

Agreed! Personally, I prefer naked Elina in bandage-bondage, but Saint Elina of the Jackrats is very inspirational.

Luther: "What the hell?"
Callie: "I think he's high."
Luther: "High?"
Callie: "As a kite. You know those 'buttercups' you let him eat a few miles back? I don't think they were buttercups."
Luther: "Oh... Well... He was hungry."
Bruce: "I looooove jackrats! They fill me with such delicious melancholy."
Callie: "Yep. He's high."
Luther: "Wonderful."
And... Scene!

Getting rats hooked on drugs like crack and meth is unethical and a bad idea all around, you said.
Accelerating their growth beyond their natural size could have dangerous consequences we can't always calculate for, you said.
Injecting rats to make them super-intelligent is a really unwise notion, you said.
But did those idiots in the lab-coats at NIMH listen?
Nooooooooo… now look at what we've got...giant crackhead rats ravaging the countryside and setting up their own dysfunctional township in our garden areas...
It seems like Cal and Luther might be in for a trial before they can even begin to think about the spiders in the manor proper...

Perhaps the jackrats and the eye-spiders have reached a rapprochement. Perhaps Luther and Callie will have to contend with jackrats riding eye-spiders! Jackrat-eye-spider hussars! Jackrat-eye-spider dragoons! Jackrat-eye-spider lancers! Jackrat-eye-spider mounted infantry! The military possibilities are... well, ludicrous... but if their uniforms are flashy it could be very impressive.
