********************************************
In suffocating slowness, the jackrat mob pounces. The air around is suddenly full of long, sleek forms flashing pale teeth and claws. Those furthest away from the magical weapon are the fastest. In two quick bounds, they clear the remaining ground and join their fellows in the assault, shoulder to shoulder. “Pav Tilas!” Luther calls, jerking on the reins. The horse’s bit is suddenly released, and the animal rears upward as the first rats move to strike at its sides.
********************************************
I'm not sure of the order yet between this one and the next one. Considering that only a second or two are transpiring, it's difficult to place them sequentially. I may not even use both of them in the end, or perhaps use one of them as a flashback in a sequence that comes after this one. I'll post them both here for now.
This is the 36th page of the second-to-last chapter in the whole story, continuing the last scene in the journey Luther and Callista make to the Martilis Estate (formerly "Mitesceru Estate"). I have the next few pages already finished and ready for posting, so they should go up pretty quickly for the next few weeks. At this point, the two characters have traveled to where the Westfield Road turns North and East toward in the upper left of the map thumbnailed below.
Enjoy!
Note: Chain of Events and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones this kind of treatment toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Callie: "Luuutherrr!"
Luther: "Calm yourself, fair maiden. We are protected by Xeno's Dichotomy Paradox."
Callie: "Huh?"
Luther: "Once the jackrats are halfway here, they still have to get half of halfway here, then half of what's left, then half of that, then half of that; Aardvark Item!"
Bruce: "You mean 'ad infinitum,' and you're wrong."
Luther: "No, it's true! And once they're almost here... they'll be more-or-less hovering in midair! I'll be able to skewer them, one-by-one. Easily!"
Bruce: "In the first place, it's the other way around. They can't get here 'til they're halfway here, and they can't get halfway here 'til they're halfway to halfway here, etc. In other words, they can't even start, and they've already started. And in the second place, you're wrong."
Luther: "Hah! Shows what you know."
Bruce: "Xeno's paradoxes aren't meant to be true. They're mental exercises, and there are refutations in the literature, all the way back to Aristotle."
Callie: "And here they come! And don't call me fair maiden 'cause—"
Luther & Bruce [interrupting in unison]: "We know! You're above average!"
And... Scene!

That horse is one smart sonuvagun! He should be teaching Calculus and Philosophy at the Well of Wisdom!
Motie: "Mathematically, the only way to never make it is for the rate of motion to become zero. But don't mind me, I'm just a floating, glowing spermatozoa that somehow didn't make it into this image..."
Jeff: "Doh! I forgot the damn mote again!"

Callie: "I thought Xena's Paradox was that she couldn't jump Gabrielle's bones without the network cancelling the show."
Motie: "No, it's that steel is strong, but flesh is stronger."
Bruce [addressing Motie]: "That's the Riddle of Steel from Conan, and you're not in this scene, so buzz off."
Motie [muttering]: "Yeah? Well, horses can't talk, so you buzz off."
Bruce [addressing Callie]: "And it's Xeno, not Xena."
Luther: "Actually, now that I think about it, it's Zeno."
Bruce [blinking]: "Oh... You're right... Nevermind."

Luther often has a plan, but, as the poem says, "The best-laid [plans] of mice and men oft go awry." In this case, however, the poem could be referring to the intention of the large, predatory "mice" as much as to Luther, so maybe he's safe...
Thanks!

At that point the Lizards' Union lodged a formal grievance and the production halted pending arbitration.

Well, given the relative speed with which these things are handled by the bureaucracy, and the fact that it's an election year, not to mention the rising cost of paper ($350 worth delivered yesterday), this may take a while to resolve. It's the kind of thing that makes you want to beat your head against the...uh...floor.

Kids these days are pretty sophisticated. They more or less demand elaborate avant-garde ballet numbers inserted into the middle of their cartoons. I blame anime.

Yeah. I miss the good old days where the ballet numbers made more sense, like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C3n0B…

Magic it is, then.
I would be happy to draw a few more killing blows, but that will have to wait for the paperback publication.
